ATEX Regulations in Ireland
If flammable gases, vapours or dusts can form an explosive atmosphere at your workplace, ATEX applies. Here is the Irish framework: the duties, the zones and the training.
In Ireland, work in potentially explosive atmospheres is governed by Part 8 (Explosive Atmospheres) of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, which give effect to the ATEX "workplace" Directive 1999/92/EC (equipment is covered by ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU). Employers must assess explosion risks, classify hazardous zones, produce an Explosion Protection Document, use appropriate ATEX-rated equipment and train staff who work in those areas.

Assess the risk
Identify where explosive atmospheres can occur: flammable gases, vapours, mists or dusts.

Classify and mark zones
Classify hazardous areas into zones and mark them clearly.

Explosion Protection Document
Prepare and maintain a document setting out the risks and control measures.

ATEX-rated equipment
Use suitable ATEX-rated equipment and safe systems of work.

Train and inform staff
Train employees who work in or near hazardous zones.
Who needs ATEX training?
Anyone working in, supervising or maintaining equipment in a classified hazardous area should have ATEX awareness or training appropriate to their role, and kept current as processes and zoning change.
