Master Key System

Pat O Brien Safety is proud to offer clients a complete locksmith service through our trusted partner, Smithlock, who is licensed by the Private Security Authority (PSA) and has over 25 years of experience in the industry.

We recognise that physical security and key management are just as critical as safety compliance when it comes to your premises. That’s why we ensure that all mechanical locking systems we install or upgrade comply with current Irish building and fire regulations.

🔐 PSA Compliance
As of February 1st 2017, it is a legal requirement in Ireland that all locksmiths are licensed by the Private Security Authority (PSA). It is an offence to perform locksmith duties without a PSA licence – and an offence to hire an unlicensed locksmith. (Learn more: www.psa-gov.ie)

Overview

Ensuring the safety and security of properties while adhering to fire regulations is a crucial responsibility for employers and property owners in Ireland.

Irish fire safety legislation (Fire Services Acts 1981 & 2003) requires all final exit doors in commercial and residential properties can allow fast, keyless exit during emergencies. Thumb turn cylinders meet this requirement by allowing internal door unlocking without a key, without compromising external security.

According to Technical Guidance Document B – Fire Safety (2006):

“Doors on escape routes… should only be fitted with simple fastenings that can be readily operated in the direction of escape without the use of a key.”

Key Point: Any door requiring a key to unlock from the inside does not meet regulations. Our licensed locksmith can assess, upgrade, or replace your locks to ensure compliance.

Applications

Master key systems are commonly used in environments where access control and convenience are key:

  • Apartment Complexes: Tenants are given access only to their individual units, while landlords or building managers retain a master key to access all units when needed — ideal for maintenance or emergencies.

  • Commercial Buildings: Employees receive access to designated areas, while management has full access via a master key. This ensures security, reduces key clutter, and simplifies access control across departments.

  • Large Facilities: In schools, hospitals, and public buildings, master key systems allow selected staff to move freely while restricting access to sensitive or private areas, supporting both safety and operational efficiency.

Types

  • Simple Master Key Systems:
Ideal for smaller setups like homes or small offices. All locks use individual keys but one master key opens all.

  • Complex Master Key Systems:
Designed for larger buildings with multiple access levels. Customisable for detailed access control and tiered permissions.

  • Keyed Alike Systems:
Multiple locks (even padlocks) that use the same key – a convenient solution to reduce key clutter.

  • Restricted Key Systems:
Prevent unauthorised key duplication. Only registered key holders can order copies. Ideal for maintaining full key control across staff, tenants, or contractors.

Benefits

  • Enhanced Security: Master key systems are designed to control and monitor access across multiple entry points, enhancing overall property security. They minimise the risk of unauthorised access and ensure only approved personnel can enter designated areas.

  • Simplified Access: By reducing the need to carry multiple keys, these systems improve convenience for staff and facility managers. Authorised users can access the areas they need with a single key, which streamlines daily operations and saves time.

  • Better Key Management: Master key and restricted systems provide greater control over how keys are distributed and tracked. With fewer keys in circulation and the ability to customise access levels, businesses can reduce confusion and maintain a clearer record of who has access to what.
